Playa Las Viudas

Los Cabos has its share of majestic beaches, from the happening social scene on Medano Beach to the countless white sand beaches that line the 20-mile stretch of the Tourist Corridor from Cabo San Lucas to San Jose del Cabo. While the lure is there to simply pick the nearest beach and settle in with a tropical cocktail, be sure to get out and explore some of Cabo’s unique stretches of coastline, which seem to be hidden around every corner.

Playa Las Viudas is located on the far eastern edge of San Lucas Bay, just to the east of the popular Medano Beach. This beach was formerly known as Twin Dolphin Beach due to the hotel of the same name that used to rest on its shores. These days, this Los Cabos beach is completely void of hotels and condos, making it a beautiful lonely stretch of sand waiting to be claimed.

While the rocky shoreline and sometimes rough waters result in less than ideal swimming conditions, Playa Las Viudas is still an interesting place to visit. Otherworldly rock formations jutting up through the sand and tidepools along the shoreline provide interesting exploration opportunities. The low-key vibe at Playa Las Viudas also makes it a romantic spot for a picnic lunch or for some evening gazing under the stars.

Planning Your Excursion to Playa Las Viudas

Playa Las Viudas is located at km 11.5 along the Tourist Corridor and is accessed by a dirt road that continues for just under a half-mile toward the ocean. A small parking lot and portable toilet facilities are the only amenities. This is probably the best Los Cabos beach in the area!

Cabo Restaurants Around the Area

The renowned Sunset Monalisa restaurant is situated at the far eastern end of Playa Las Viudas and is the perfect destination for a romantic oceanfront dinner. This restaurant serves up delectable Mediterranean cuisine, but the real gem here is the elegant outdoor dining area that is perched along the cliff overlooking the sea and sand. Tables are thoughtfully situated to provide some space and privacy from other patrons, and fiery lanterns set a romantic stage. Watch the waves roll in over Playa Las Viudas while you enjoy a romantic meal and cocktails with possibly one of the best views in Cabo!

Perched atop the Sunset Monalisa is their sister restaurant, Jazz on the Rocks at Sunset Point. Offering similarly stunning views as Sunset Monalisa, Sunset Point offers a low-key vibe in comparison. This more casual restaurant is also a little more budget friendly, but also without the same flair as its counterpart. The live jazz band makes this a great place for dining or drinks, where you can relax to the sounds of instruments floating over the breeze and soak in views of iconic sights such as the Lands End Arch and a sunset over the ocean. The sunset arrives with plenty of fanfare, with Sunset Point staff blowing conch shells to farewell the last rays of light for the day. With a multi-tiered design at Sunset Point, it is easy to enjoy the views from many vantage points on the restaurant’s grounds. Feast on appetizers such as calamari, enjoy a refreshing green salad, or order a pizza to share. Jazz on the Rocks at Sunset Point is a place to linger. Order wine by the glass or bottle, and revel in being treated to some of the very best views in Cabo!

Another great dining option when in this area of Cabo is the nearby Estrella Restaurante, situated on the grounds of the Welk Resort. The restaurant offers an upscale interior that provides a pleasant atmosphere for indoor dining, as well as a spacious patio area with umbrella covered tables overlooking the resort’s swimming pools and the ocean beyond. Estrella offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so you won’t have to perfectly time your visit. Fuel up on their infamous French toast before hitting the beach at Playa Las Viudas. The cinnamon French toast has just the right amount of sweetness, and the large portions are perfect for sharing. For lunch and dinner, Estrella features wood fired pizzas and Baja-med specialty plates. For seafood lovers, the large shrimp here are a favorite, as well as the blackened sea bass. Everything ordered comes with beautiful plating and exceptional presentation. Wash it all down with a handcrafted margarita and soak in the luxurious surroundings at this upscale restaurant!

In Cabo, it pays to get off the beaten path and explore some of the more undeveloped and remote beaches such as Playa Las Viudas. When you do, the great thing is that amenities such as top-notch restaurants are still never very far away!
