Where History and Religion Collide

The Parroquia San Jose, commonly referred to as the San Jose del Cabo Church, is perhaps one of the most identifiable and popular landmarks in the area. The church sits in the bustling downtown area that also incorporates the town’s main square, putting it right in the heart of all that draws visitors to San Jose del Cabo. Its pale colonial façade includes bell towers that are as impressive to witness as they are to hear. The San Jose del Cabo Church was first built in 1730 by a Jesuit priest, but future conflicts with native tribes brought the first building to the ground. The second version was completed in 1840 but was destroyed during a hurricane. A stronger standing third version was erected in 1940 and was home to Combani Missionaries between 1948 and 1986. Today, the church functions in accordance with its originally designed purpose and mass is held daily.

Visiting the Parroquia San Jose

Visitors are encouraged to come and tour the church as well as participate in mass when services are being held. Once you’ve climbed the steps, you’ll step through an archway into the sanctuary and here, guests are greeted by towering ceilings, tiled flooring, and a decorative altar. The charm and warm welcome of this church make it a popular venue for destination weddings as well as a wonderful place to find peace and tranquility in the middle of a busy day. While there’s plenty to see, the church also hosts a store where books and souvenirs can be purchased as commemorative gifts with proceeds going back to the church. This is one of the best Cabo attractions.

Wide steps lead up to the arched doorway of this charming colonial-style building, with two bell towers flanking the main entry. Over the oversized doorway is an intricate mural depicting the death of the founding Jesuit priest, Tamaral. Intricate tilework and wooden pews inside maintain the church’s original era of design.
