Beaches, golfing, and water activities are some of the many things that come to mind when imagining a getaway to Cabo. In addition to all these draws, the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are also home to rich history and culture that are well worth taking the time to explore, such as the Church of Saint Luke.
The Churches in Cabo San Lucas – A Piece of Cabo History
Visiting some of Cabo’s longstanding historical buildings adds an additional layer of depth and cultural understanding to your vacation. The Church of Saint Luke or Parroquia de San Lucas Evangelista was built in 1730 by a Spanish missionary. Although some renovations have been completed in order to upkeep the building, very little has been done to change the church’s appearance, retaining its historical beauty and significance.
A wide staircase leads from the street level through wrought iron gates onto the church grounds. The Church of Saint Luke is beautiful for its architectural elements both on the interior and exterior. Part of the beauty lies in its simplicity, with its light exterior and arched doorways. A few more steps lead you in through the front entrance to the church’s interior, where ancient wooden pews line each side of the center aisle, which holds traditional mosaic tiles. Arched windows complete with functional wooden shutters line both walls, allowing natural light to stream in.
More than just a historical site, the Church of Saint Luke is still a fully operational catholic church. Bilingual masses are offered at noon each Sunday, and visitors are welcome to attend. This is one of the most famous of all the churches in Cabo San Lucas!

A large number of restaurants are located in the area, so this is an easy spot to swing by if you are already out for a meal. It is also nearby Plaza Amelia Wilkes, the town square, where festivals and events are frequently held. The popular Medano Beach lies just on the other side of the marina, where you will find oceanfront restaurants, bars, water activities, and gear rentals dotting this two-mile stretch of sand.
