Explore the Area
From mid-December through April, visitors to Cabo will find themselves in the area alongside pods of humpback whales following their annual migratory pattern. Hop on board a whale watching tour while you’re in town for a chance to savor sights of these magnificent creatures thriving in their natural habitat.
Winter also coincides with whale shark season, and you won’t want to miss the once in a lifetime opportunity to snorkel alongside these gentle giants. Reaching between 18-33 feet in length, there’s no better way to put things into perspective than hopping right in amongst a school of whale sharks. While it may sound threatening, these plankton feeders have little interest in humans. Capture amazing photographs of your time in Cabo beneath the water’s surface!
The winter months in Cabo are great for booking a fishing excursion, as this is when fishing is at its peak. There are many companies that offer deep sea sport fishing adventures, helping anglers to land fresh catches such as tuna, snapper, and marlin, among others. Check with outfitters such as Blue Sky Cabo Fishing & Tours for several options. Blue Sky Cabo operates yachts that range from 31 to 60 feet from which to choose. Fishing excursions range from 4 to 8 hours, depending on your level of interest.
While winter days in Cabo still see warm temperatures, the daytime heat tends to be less intense, making this a great time to explore some of Cabo’s terrain beyond the beach, such as the desert or mountains. Those willing to travel a little bit outside of downtown Cabo should consider a hike to the waterfall in the Cañón de la Zorra at Rancho Sol de Mayo, just outside the small town of Santiago. This 35-foot cascade falls into a pool at the base, great for cooling off in the crisp waters and taking in the surrounding scenery. More avid hikers should consider the challenge of some of the ascents found in the Sierra de Laguna mountain range that lies north of Cabo. A variety of trails wind their way throughout this range, provide scenic views. The ultimate challenge is El Pichacho, which extends for 15 miles and includes significant elevation gain. While tackling this terrain at any time of year is certainly a challenge, it is best done during winter months when cooler weather can be appreciated.
Celebrate the Holidays in Cabo
If your winter getaway to Cabo falls over the holidays, you’ll find plenty of options for enjoying the festivities. Steeped in Catholic tradition, the days leading up to Christmas are celebrated with activities surrounding Los Posadas, with candlelit processions and nativity reenactments. From holiday décor lining the streets to festive drinks such as Ponche Navideño (Christmas punch), you’ll find yourself slipping right into the holiday spirit!
